Reaching out

The social fabric in Malaysia has dramatically changed, over the last few decades. Today many households are run by single mothers who live in the cities in crowded rented flats without extended family support.

Statistics show an estimated 126,810 single mothers who need aid, making up 1.11% of our population.

The Ministry’s Social Welfare Department (JKM) offers financial aid and grants for the mothers as well as the school going children. However, there are times we may not be ale to reach these single mothers. There are also many other agencies funded by us and others who offer various facilities to single mothers.

So if you a single mother or know anyone else who is a single mother, please post your details as there is help available for her, either from the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development. We have also listed agencies below.

We will try our best to resolve your issues as soon as possible.

Thank You

Kompleks Penyayang BAKTI came into existence on the realisation that there was a need for an institution that provides an integrated welfare services to the less fortunate such as children, older persons and single mothers.

The establishment of the Complex was the culmination of a joint-effort by Badan Amal Kebajikan Tenaga Isteri (BAKTI) as an NGO, Messrs. Yarisan Holdings Sdn. Bhd. from the private sector and the Department of Social Welfare Malaysia (DSWM) representing the Government. The tripartite alliance not only symbolized the concern of every sectors of the Malaysian society over the unfortunate but also a showpiece of an excellent cooperation.

Under this tripartite cooperation, BAKTI as the promoter of the idea provided the networking for the sectors involved, Yarisan Holdings as the project sponsor provided the funding and the DSWM provided land and management for the administration of the Complex.

The Complex is located on 11 acre of land with surroundings rich in architectural and landscaping based on the Malay village. It portrays a calm and harmonious village within fresh greeneries and orchards. 4.5 acres of the land was planted with fruit trees and indigenous trees from all over Malaysia to enliven a tranquil and relaxing environment.

National Action Plan to Empower Single Mothers

Strengthening policies and programmes for single mothers

This project aims to strengthen national policies and programmes targeted at single mothers, particularly those categorized as poor or hardcore poor. The long term objective of this project is to ensure that single mothers receive the necessary institutional support and policy attention to empower them and lift them out of poverty. This is consistent with the Millennium Development Goals and the Ninth Malaysia Plan (2006-2010) development thrust to ‘address persistent socio-economic inequalities constructively and productively’.

Angels @ Work

For your information, I am one of the directors of Angels@Work (Angel Resources Sdn. Bhd.), an organization geared towards helping such single mothers to acheive the above. We train them to be prepared for business, then offer them proven businesses which can help them get going almost from the start. (See press article below from The Star papers.)We train them first because they need a different mindset to operate a business. Then be offer them proven businesses because they cannot afford to fail. Then they grow once they have both mindset and experience. Angels@Work will hand-hold them along the way. And that is where our organization is different from the Charity bodies and NGOs.

We do not give handouts. We give opportunities.

Single mothers program

ERA Consumer Malaysia with our partner the Friedrich Naumann Foundation had set up 10 Community Centers in 4 states namely Perak, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan and Kedah.
These community centres were set up in 10 suburban areas where a minimum 20,000 of its residents are Indians from the low income group. About 100 to 600 poor Indian households in these areas have access to each centre. Our target is to reach at least a woman in each low-income family. Special focus is also given to youth development and single mothers who face various challenges in managing their household.

The main objective of this project is to empower Indian women living in impoverished suburban areas and build their confidence to enhance their quality of life. It also aims to create awareness among these women of their basic rights and encourage them to access facilities and services provided by various government agencies.

Our community centers have been in operation for 3 years now and ERA has documented all the achievements and challenges that we achieve and encountered in that short time.
The centres also aim to raise the socio-economic status of Indian women by enhancing their capacities to participate in self-help groups formed by the local communities.

In order to achieve these objectives, ERA organized many educational workshops and skills training programmes for these women in order for them to become self-reliant by undertaking self-employment activities or venturing into small businesses. <nanthini@eraconsumer.org>, or call her at 012- 2737160
